Learn to Fly

A powered parachute takes off from the ground with the parachute laid out behind you. Once the engine starts, the propeller inflates the canopy, and the aircraft lifts off within 10 to 15 meters. Climbing and descending are controlled using a foot throttle to adjust power, while steering is managed by toggles similar to those used by parachutists to turn left or right. Landing is achieved by reducing power and flaring the parachute just before touching the ground.

To operate a powered parachute, you need a Recreation Aviation Australia (RAAus) pilot’s certificate, classified as group “D” under Civil Aviation Order (CAO) 95.32.

Powered Parachutes Australia offers training for new pilots, requiring 15-20 hours of flight instruction from a licensed instructor. Novices can fly solo after just 3 to 5 hours, with the remainder of the training completed under supervision. The training covers:

  • 15-20 hours of flight time
  • Powered parachute flight theory
  • Initial dual flight training with an instructor leading to solo flights
  • Solo training and supervision
  • Pre-solo exam
  • Pilot license exam
  • Practical flight test

The course is held at White Gum Farm near York, WA, and meets RAAus license standards with the support of qualified instructors.

Flying is weather-dependent and may need to be completed in stages. Typically, most flights occur in the early morning or evening when conditions are favorable. Appropriate clothing is essential, including warm layers, long pants or ski pants, jackets, gloves, sunglasses, and sunscreen. The medical requirements are similar to those needed for a motor vehicle license.
